Venetian Plaster Finishes
Based in Calgary, Elevation Renovations creates custom Venetian plaster, Marmorino and architectural mineral finishes for residential, designer and commercial projects throughout Western Canada, across Canada and for select projects in the United States. From soft matte lime plaster to highly polished marble effects, every finish is hand-applied and developed around the colour, lighting, architecture and design intent of the space.

Marmorino is a traditional lime-based Venetian plaster known for soft movement, natural depth and a refined matte or satin finish. It is ideal for feature walls, fireplaces, stairwells and large architectural surfaces where the goal is the warmth and character of natural stone without heavy pattern or excessive gloss.
Marmorino

Polished Venetian plaster is created through multiple fine layers that are compressed and burnished to produce depth, luminosity and a marble-like finish. It works beautifully on luxury feature walls, fireplaces, powder rooms, reception areas and statement interiors, ranging from subtle tonal movement to dramatic high-polish surfaces.
Polished Venetian Plaster

Stone and travertine plaster finishes recreate the texture, variation and character of limestone, travertine and aged architectural stone. These hand-applied mineral finishes are suited to fireplaces, entrance walls, feature walls, hospitality spaces and commercial interiors where a more organic and dimensional surface is desired.
Stone & Travertine Effects

Our custom architectural finishes combine Venetian plaster techniques with layered colour, mineral movement, metallic accents, patina and hand-developed texture. We create one-of-a-kind surfaces for luxury homes, restaurants, hotels, retail environments, offices and designer-led projects in Calgary, throughout Western Canada and for select projects across Canada and the United States.

What Is Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is a hand-applied decorative wall finish used to create depth, movement and the appearance of natural stone or marble. Traditional Venetian plaster is based on lime and finely ground mineral materials, while modern specialty systems offer a wider range of textures, colours, sheen levels and performance characteristics.
Unlike standard paint, Venetian plaster is built in multiple thin layers and worked by hand with a trowel. The surface can be left soft and matte, compressed to a subtle satin sheen, or burnished to create a highly polished marble-like finish. Because every pass of the trowel contributes to the final movement, no two finished walls are exactly the same.
More Than a Decorative Wall Finish
The finished appearance depends on much more than colour. Substrate preparation, lighting, wall size, trowel movement, number of layers, burnishing and protective finish all influence how Venetian plaster looks and performs. Elevation Renovations approaches each surface as part of the architecture of the room, considering fireplaces, cabinetry, lighting, transitions and surrounding materials before the finish is developed.
Venetian Plaster for Residential & Commercial Interiors
We apply Venetian plaster and architectural mineral finishes to feature walls, fireplaces, range hoods, stairwells, entrances, powder rooms, reception areas, restaurants, retail spaces, hotels and other statement interiors. Based in Calgary, Elevation Renovations works on specialty finishing projects throughout Western Canada, across Canada and on select projects in the United States.
Custom Samples Before the Final Finish
Colour, texture and sheen are developed through custom finish samples before the main application begins. This allows homeowners, designers and architects to review how the plaster responds to the lighting, materials and design direction of the space before committing to the finished surface.

Where Venetian Plaster Works Best
Venetian plaster can be used far beyond a single feature wall. Its depth, movement and range of finishes make it suitable for residential, designer and commercial interiors, from subtle whole-room applications to highly dramatic architectural focal points.
Feature Walls & Statement Interiors
Venetian plaster transforms feature walls into architectural focal points with depth, movement and natural variation. Marmorino, polished plaster and custom mineral finishes can be tailored in warm neutrals, stone tones, deep colours or dramatic layered effects to complement modern, traditional and luxury interiors throughout Calgary and beyond.
Bathrooms & Powder Rooms
Venetian plaster can create a sophisticated, continuous finish on selected bathroom and powder-room walls, particularly where a decorative mineral surface is desired. For wet areas such as shower interiors or floors, we evaluate the application and may recommend a purpose-built microcement system where greater water resistance and durability are required.
Fireplaces & Range Hoods
Fireplaces and custom range hoods are ideal for Venetian plaster because the finish can visually connect cabinetry, stone, metal and surrounding walls. From soft limestone-inspired movement to polished marble and custom layered effects, we create architectural finishes that turn these surfaces into cohesive, handcrafted focal points.
Restaurants, Hotels, Retail & Commercial Spaces
Architectural plaster is particularly effective in hospitality, retail and commercial interiors where the surface itself becomes part of the brand experience. We create custom Venetian plaster and mineral finishes for reception areas, restaurants, hotels, offices, retail environments and designer-led projects throughout Calgary, Western Canada and select projects across Canada and the United States.
Entrances, Stairwells & Large Architectural Walls
Tall entrances, stairwells, curved walls and double-height spaces benefit from the natural movement of hand-applied Venetian plaster. Unlike flat paint, the finish responds to daylight and architectural lighting, revealing subtle changes in texture, depth and sheen as you move through the space.
Not Sure Which Finish Fits the Space?
We develop custom finish samples based on your plans, inspiration images, materials, lighting and overall design direction. This allows colour, movement, texture and sheen to be reviewed before the final application, helping homeowners, designers and architects choose a Venetian plaster finish that works with the entire space.
The right finish depends on the surface, lighting, use of the space and the look you want to achieve. We’ll help you choose a system that performs well and feels intentional within the overall design.

Our Venetian Plaster Process
Every Venetian plaster project starts with the surface, the design intent and the way light moves through the space. Our process combines careful preparation, custom sampling and hand-applied finishing so the final result feels integrated with the architecture rather than added on afterward.
Design Consultation & Finish Direction
We review the space, plans, inspiration images, surrounding materials and lighting to understand the finish you want to achieve. For designer-led or commercial projects, we can also work directly with architects, interior designers and project teams to refine colour, movement, texture and sheen.
Hand-Applied Plaster Layers
The finish is built by hand through multiple troweled layers. Each application contributes to the final colour variation, movement and depth. Depending on the selected system, we may use Marmorino, polished plaster, lime-based finishes or custom mineral materials to create the desired effect.
Custom Finishing
Samples
Before the main application begins, we develop physical finish samples so colour, texture, movement and sheen can be reviewed in advance. Samples can be adjusted until the selected Venetian plaster finish works with flooring, cabinetry, stone, lighting and other materials in the space.
Burnishing, Detailing & Protection
The final surface may be compressed, burnished, polished or left softly textured depending on the finish. Edges, corners and transitions are refined by hand, while appropriate waxes, sealers or protective treatments are applied where required for the intended appearance, durability and overall performance.
Surface Preparation
Venetian plaster depends on a properly prepared substrate. We inspect the surface, repair imperfections, address transitions and prepare the wall using appropriate primers and base systems. Careful preparation creates a stable, consistent foundation for the decorative plaster layers that follow throughout the application.
Final Review
Once complete, we review the finished surface in the actual lighting of the space and complete any final detailing. Because Venetian plaster is handmade, subtle variation is part of the character of the finish rather than a flaw or a repeating manufactured pattern.
From the first sample to the final burnish, every step is deliberate, giving you a finish that feels considered, handcrafted and fully integrated with the space.

How Much Does Venetian Plaster Cost in Calgary?
Venetian plaster pricing varies with the finish, surface condition, project size and level of detail. As a general planning range, professional applications often begin around $20–$30 per sq. ft., while polished, textured and highly customized architectural finishes can range from $30–$45+ per sq. ft.
Classic Marmorino
Classic Marmorino and softly textured Venetian plaster typically start around $20–$30 per sq. ft. These finishes create natural movement with a matte or satin appearance and are well suited to feature walls, fireplaces and larger architectural surfaces where refined texture is preferred over a highly polished look.
Size, Height & Access
Large open walls may be more efficient per square foot than smaller projects with numerous corners and transitions. Stairwells, vaulted ceilings, double-height feature walls and commercial installations can require scaffolding, specialty access or additional protection and setup, which are considered when the overall project price is calculated.
Polished & Specialty Finishes
Polished Venetian plaster, layered marble effects, metallic accents and more detailed specialty finishes commonly range from $30–$45+ per sq. ft. Pricing increases with additional layers, colour variation, burnishing and hand detailing required to create greater depth, movement and a more complex architectural finish.
Custom Samples & Design
Custom finish samples establish colour, texture, movement and sheen before the final application begins. Standard sampling may be included with larger projects, while extensive colour development, multiple design options, mock-ups or architect and designer-directed samples may involve an additional design or sample-development fee.
Surface Preparation
Surface condition has a major impact on the final price. New drywall, painted walls, fireplaces, damaged substrates and curved surfaces require different preparation. Repairs, primers and base coats may be additional because Venetian plaster relies on a properly prepared, stable surface for a consistent and durable finished application.
Small Features & Custom Projects
Fireplaces, range hoods and smaller feature walls may carry a higher square-foot rate because setup, masking, preparation and sampling are required regardless of size. Highly customized residential, hospitality and commercial projects are individually priced according to the finish, detail, access and overall scope of work.
Send us dimensions, photos, drawings or inspiration images and we can help establish the right Venetian plaster finish, realistic budget and next steps for your project.
How Long Does Venetian Plaster Take?
Most Venetian plaster projects take several days rather than several hours. Timing depends on the size of the surface, preparation required, number of plaster layers, drying time and complexity of the finish. A single feature wall may take 3–5 days, while larger or highly customized projects can take one to two weeks or more.
01
Consultation & Sampling
The process begins with finish direction, colour selection and custom samples. Straightforward residential projects may move quickly, while designer-led or commercial work can involve several sample revisions before the final texture, movement and sheen are approved for application.
02
Surface Preparation
Preparation typically takes one to two days depending on the existing surface. Repairs, sanding, priming and base preparation are completed before decorative plaster begins. Fireplaces, damaged walls, curved surfaces and complex architectural details may require additional preparation time.
03
Venetian Plaster Application
Venetian plaster is built through multiple hand-applied layers, with appropriate drying time between coats. A typical Marmorino or polished plaster finish may require two to four decorative passes, while custom stone, marble or artistic effects can involve additional layers and detailing.
04
Burnishing & Final Detailing
Once the final layers are ready, the surface may be compressed, burnished or polished to achieve the desired sheen and depth. Corners, edges and transitions are refined by hand, and any final artistic detailing is completed before protective treatments are applied.
05
Protection & Final Review
Where required, waxes, sealers or protective finishes are applied after the plaster has reached the appropriate stage. We then review the surface in the finished lighting, complete final detailing and provide any care information specific to the Venetian plaster system used.
We build realistic drying and curing time into every schedule rather than rushing the layers, because the quality of Venetian plaster depends as much on timing as it does on the final trowel pass.
Why Choose Elevation for Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is only as good as the preparation, design judgment and craftsmanship behind it. Elevation combines specialty decorative finishing with deep construction experience, allowing us to consider the entire surface, surrounding architecture and long-term performance rather than treating plaster as simply another wall coating.
Red Seal Craftsmanship & Preparation
Elevation is owner-led by a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter with more than 25 years of construction experience. We understand the substrate behind the finish, from repairs and transitions to fireplaces, cabinetry and curved walls, because proper preparation is what gives Venetian plaster its beauty and long-term performance.
Custom Finish Development
Every project can begin with custom samples developed around your colour palette, materials, lighting and overall design direction. We refine movement, texture and sheen before application so homeowners, designers and architects can see how the Venetian plaster will work within the completed space.
Specialty Architectural Finishes
Our work extends well beyond one standard Venetian plaster look. We create Marmorino, polished plaster, stone and travertine effects, metallic finishes, layered patinas and custom artistic surfaces, allowing each project to receive a finish developed specifically for its architecture, atmosphere and intended visual character.

We work with homeowners, interior designers, architects, builders and commercial project teams. From a single fireplace or feature wall to hospitality, retail and large architectural installations, we can develop finishes from inspiration images, drawings, specifications and collaborative design direction.

Venetian Plaster Calgary FAQ
Planning a Venetian plaster project often raises questions about cost, durability, finishes, preparation and where it can be used. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often from homeowners, designers, architects and commercial clients in Calgary and beyond.
How much does Venetian plaster cost in Calgary?
Professional Venetian plaster typically starts around $20–$30 per sq. ft. for classic Marmorino and softer finishes. Polished plaster, multi-colour effects, stone textures, metallic details and custom architectural finishes commonly range from $30–$45+ per sq. ft. Surface preparation, height, access and project complexity also affect the final price.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster and Marmorino?
Venetian plaster is a broad term covering several hand-applied decorative plaster techniques. Marmorino is a traditional lime-based finish within that family, known for natural stone-like movement and a matte to satin appearance. Other Venetian plaster systems can be smoother, more polished, more textured or developed into highly customized artistic finishes.
Can Venetian plaster be used on fireplaces?
Yes. Fireplaces are one of the most popular applications for Venetian plaster because the finish can create a seamless architectural focal point without relying on tile or manufactured stone. The substrate, fireplace construction and heat conditions are reviewed first so the appropriate plaster system and preparation method can be selected.
If hole patterns change, patching is required. We’ll patch, refinish, and re-drill so the final result looks clean.
Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms?
Venetian plaster works beautifully on many bathroom and powder-room walls, creating a continuous mineral finish with more depth than standard paint. For showers, floors and other continuously wet surfaces, we evaluate the conditions carefully and may recommend a purpose-built microcement system where additional water resistance and durability are required.
Is Venetian plaster durable?
When the substrate is properly prepared and the correct plaster system is used, Venetian plaster can provide a long-lasting architectural finish. Durability depends on the location, plaster type and protective treatment. Appropriate waxes or sealers can also be used where additional protection, cleanability or moisture resistance is desirable.
Can you match a specific colour or inspiration photo?
Yes. Custom samples allow colour, movement, texture and sheen to be reviewed before the full application begins. Samples are particularly valuable for feature walls, fireplaces, designer-led homes and commercial spaces because lighting and surrounding materials can dramatically influence how a Venetian plaster finish appears in the finished room.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster and microcement?
Venetian plaster is primarily selected for decorative depth, movement and stone or marble-like character on walls and architectural features. Microcement is a more performance-driven seamless coating commonly used on floors, showers and other demanding surfaces. Elevation works with both systems and can recommend the better material for each application.
Do you only provide Venetian plaster in Calgary?
No. Elevation Renovations is based in Calgary and regularly serves Calgary, Okotoks and the Foothills, but specialty Venetian plaster and architectural finishing projects can also be considered throughout Western Canada, across Canada and in the United States. Travel projects are evaluated based on scale, finish complexity, schedule and overall scope.
